A wall-mounted TV can look finished right up until two cords drop from the bottom edge. If you want to hide TV cables in the wall, the neat part is easy to picture. The part inside the wall deserves more thought.
Power and audio-video cables follow different rules. The wall may also contain blocking, insulation, plumbing, old plaster keys, or masonry that changes the route completely. A good plan accounts for all of that before the first opening is cut.
Here is how to get the clean look without trapping the wrong cable, cutting into a surprise, or building a setup that has to be opened again when you replace the streaming box.
How to hide TV cables in the wall without hiding a fire risk
Start by separating line-voltage power from low-voltage signal cables. The flexible power cord that came with the TV is not building wiring. The National Electrical Code language published by the National Fire Protection Association says flexible cords and power-supply cords generally cannot run through holes in walls or be concealed by walls. Tucking that cord into the stud bay is not a shortcut.
A listed in-wall power relocation kit is a different product. It uses a purpose-built, factory-assembled pathway between a lower inlet and a recessed receptacle behind the television. Follow the product's listed wall types, clearances, and installation instructions exactly. Legrand's own instructions warn against putting an ordinary power-supply cord in the wall cavity.
If the job adds or moves a standard receptacle, alters branch-circuit wiring, or does not fit a listed plug-in kit, bring in a licensed electrical contractor. Permit rules vary by jurisdiction. In Colorado Springs and Fountain, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department lists electrical work among projects that require a permit. Ask the authority for your address before work begins.
Plan AV before you hide TV cables in the wall
HDMI, Ethernet, coax, optical cable, and speaker wire are the low-voltage side. Use cable marked and listed for its intended in-wall application. The correct marking depends on the cable type, so "CL2 only" is too simple a rule. Look for the in-wall rating on the jacket or manufacturer documentation, and match it to the route and local code.
Then think one device ahead. A television that only needs one HDMI cable today may gain a game console, soundbar, antenna feed, or wired network connection next year. If the wall allows it, a serviceable conduit or raceway gives you a replacement path without another drywall cut. Keep signal cable separated from power as the kit and code require, avoid sharp bends, and leave enough slack at both ends to pull the screen forward for service.
Long HDMI runs also need attention. Confirm the cable supports the resolution, refresh rate, and features your equipment actually uses. Test the complete cable before it disappears into the wall. For a room with streaming problems, an Ethernet run back to a properly placed network switch can be more dependable than asking the TV to hold a weak Wi-Fi signal. A clean TV mount starts with the wall, not the screen
The mounting hardware has to match the wall and the mount manufacturer's instructions. Wood studs, metal studs, concrete block, brick, and framed walls covered in plaster are different fastening problems. A fastener that is right for one can be unsafe in another.
Confirm the screen's weight, its VESA mounting pattern, and the mount's rated capacity. Find the actual structure rather than trusting a stud-finder beep by itself. Check both sides of the wall for plumbing fixtures, electrical devices, and anything else that hints at what may cross the proposed openings. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends mounting flat-screen TVs to a wall or furniture and following the manufacturer's securing instructions.
The cleanest TV wall is the one you can still service safely five years from now.
Height matters too, but there is no magic measurement for every room. Mark the outline with painter's tape, sit where you normally watch, and check glare from windows and lights. If the screen goes above a fireplace, read both manufacturers' clearance and operating-temperature requirements. Measure the wall temperature while the fireplace is in normal use before committing to that location.
Older Pueblo walls change how you hide TV cables in the wall
A straightforward drywall stud bay is only one version of this job. Older homes in Pueblo can have lath and plaster, masonry exterior walls, shallow cavities, or later remodels layered over the original surface. Newer homes around Colorado Springs may hide insulation, fire blocking, or a plumbing vent in the exact bay you hoped to use.
That does not mean the cords must stay exposed. It means the best answer may be a paintable surface raceway, a route through an adjacent closet, or a different wall. A surface raceway is especially useful on solid masonry because it is reversible and does not pretend an empty cavity exists where it does not. Before cutting, agree on what happens if the first-choice route is blocked. Also settle whether patching and paint are included. "Cable concealment" can mean two brush plates and an open path, or it can mean a fully repaired finish. The quote should say which one.
What to check before the TV goes back on the wall
Power up every source and test every input. Confirm the remote works with any equipment hidden behind the screen. Check that the mount moves through its full range without pinching a cable, and make sure ventilation openings remain clear. Label both ends of every cable. Take a photo of the open wall and cable route before it is closed, then keep the kit instructions with the rest of the house records.
